Our Story

The Next Chapter

What started with an apprenticeship has grown through several industries, several businesses and decades of learning.

Windows became conservatories. Conservatories led to blinds. Blinds led to manufacturing. And eventually, the frustrations of importing shutters led to British Made Shutters.

Today, we are continuing to invest in our factory, our people, our products and our trade partners as we work towards building a stronger British shutter manufacturing industry.

The business has evolved many times. And we don’t intend to stop evolving now.

Craftsmanship. Quality. Trust.

British manufactured.
Family run.
Trade only.

Still Family Run

Although the business has changed considerably since Nick first entered the double-glazing industry, the foundations remain the same. BMS is still a family-run company.

Nick remains heavily involved in manufacturing and product development, while Carolyn has helped build and support the business from its earliest days.

That family-business mentality still influences the way we work with our customers today.

We want our trade partners to feel that they have a manufacturer behind them who listens, adapts and genuinely wants their business to succeed.

Making a Shutter in Britain

Nick has never been particularly good at sitting still.

During the disruption caused by the pandemic, he began looking more seriously at whether a shutter could be manufactured here in the UK. Using the manufacturing experience the business had already gained through blinds, he began developing a composite shutter from the factory in Evesham.

It started as a solution for our own customers. But word soon spread. Local shutter companies and installers began asking whether they could buy the product too.

And that changed everything.

From Conservatories to Blinds

As New Look grew, customers increasingly began asking Nick about blinds for their new windows and conservatories.

Seeing another opportunity, Nick and his wife Carolyn launched Stylish Blinds. What began as an additional service quickly became a business in its own right.

Demand continued to grow, and before long Nick began manufacturing blinds himself rather than simply supplying them. The business expanded to four fitting teams and built a strong local reputation.

It was through Stylish Blinds that shutters became the next natural step.

How it began

British Made Shutters didn’t begin with shutters. It began with Nick.

At just 14 years old, Nick left school and began an apprenticeship with his uncle in the double-glazing industry. It was a time when traditional hardwood windows were beginning to fall out of favour and uPVC was becoming the more practical, modern choice for homeowners.

Nick saw that change happening first-hand.

And it became the first of many shifts in the industry that would shape his career. As the market evolved, Nick did too.

He went on to start his own business, New Look, moving into conservatories and building a successful home improvement company of his own.

Entering the Shutter Industry

Like much of the UK shutter industry at the time, shutters were initially sourced from China. They were popular with customers, but the supply model came with its challenges.

Long lead times, shipping delays, communication difficulties and a lack of control over production could all create headaches for both the business and the customer.

Then COVID arrived. For many businesses, everything slowed down. For Nick, it became the catalyst for the next chapter.

From B2C to B2B

As demand from the trade grew, our direct-to-consumer area naturally became smaller. We realised that the biggest opportunity for British Made Shutters wasn’t to compete with independent shutter businesses. It was to supply them.

So we made the decision to move away from B2C and become a dedicated trade-only manufacturer.

That decision shaped the business we are today.

British Made Shutters now works with shutter companies and installers across the UK, manufacturing shutters from our facility in Evesham, Worcestershire.

And one principle sits at the heart of everything we do:

We will never be your competitor.

Built Through Development

British Made Shutters has never been about simply making the same product forever.

Since developing our first shutters, we have continued to refine them based on manufacturing experience, fitter feedback and conversations with our trade partners.

That has led to new profiles, new frames, improved components, our Slim Line range, Non-Beaded shutters, hidden hinges, new colours and countless smaller improvements across the product.

Many of those developments have come from one simple question:

Can we make this better?
